Exercise and MENTAL HEALTH
Learn to Run for Anxiety Sensitivity
This quasi-experimental study examined whether a running intervention could reduce anxiety sensitivity among women with elevated anxiety symptoms.
Journal: Women in Sport and Physical Activity
Collaborator: Dr. Margo Watt (St.FX)
Funder: UNB
CBT + Exercise vs. Treatment as Usual: A Pilot Study
This pilot study evaluated the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a combined group cognitive behavioural therapy and exercise intervention (CBT+E) for treating anxiety, depression, and stress in university students.
Journal: Journal of College Student Mental Health
Student PI: Breagh Newcombe

Mental Health and Physical Activity in SCI
This cross-sectional, self-report study investigated the association between physical activity and mental health in individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Particularly, we were interested in whether anxiety sensitivity would mediate the association.
Journal: Rehabilitation Psychology
Student PI: Emma Connell
Athletics and Alcohol: A Study of Student-Athlete Risk
This cross-sectional, self-report study explored whether alcohol use differs between athletes and non-athletes and whether athlete-specific versions of common risk factors improve our prediction of student-athlete drinking.
Journal: Journal of Clinical Sport Psychology
Student PI: Siobhan Fitzpatrick
anxiety sensitivity
What Does ‘High Anxiety Sensitivity’ Look Like?
This cluster analysis investigated how the lower-order factors of anxiety sensitivity appear in a treatment-seeking sample of adults with high anxiety sensitivity and how these clusters are uniquely associated with psychopathology.
Journal: Cognitive Therapy and Research
Collaborator: Drs. Margo Watt (St.FX) & Sherry Stewart (Dal)
Funder: CIHR
Does Anxiety Sensitivity Interfere with Sexual Well-Being?
This study examined the links between anxiety sensitivity and sexual function, cognitive-affective responses, and sexual behaviour in a community sample of adults.
Journal: Sexual and Relationship Therapy
Collaborators: Drs. Lucia O’Sullivan & Sandra Byers (UNB)
An Investigation of the Relation Between Anxiety Sensitivity and Substance Use
This self-report study investigated the associations between AS and alcohol use, cannabis use, and drinking games and pregaming behaviours among young adults, and the mediating role of social anxiety and moderating role of outcome expectancies on these associations.
Journal: Substance Use and Misuse
Student PI: Emma Giberson
Investigating Pathways from Anxiety Sensitivity to Impairment in a Treatment-Seeking Sample
This self-report study examined whether elevated anxiety sensitivity is associated with functional impairment by way of heightened anxiety symptoms and resultant depressive symptoms or unhealthy coping behaviours.
Journal: Journal of Affective Disorders
Collaborators: Drs. Kara Thompson & Margo Watt (St. FX); and Sherry Stewart (Dal)
Funder: CIHR
Distance-Delivered interventions
Firefighters Accessing Care for Trauma
This study was a clinical case series testing the efficacy of narrative exposure therapy delivered by a paraprofessional via videoconferencing (eNET) in reducing posttraumatic stress symptoms among firefighters.
Journal: Journal of Traumatic Stress
Funder: CIHR
Distance-Delivered Parent Training for Childhood Disruptive Behaviour
This randomized controlled trial and economic analysis evaluated the efficacy of a distance-delivered intervention (e.g., via telephone), Strongest Families, as compared to usual care in reducing child externalizing behaviour.
Journal: Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology
